Kew Gardens Year 9 Trip 2024

At the end of last term, our Year 9 students went to Kew Gardens to support their work on world biomes.  They visited many of the pleasures of the gardens, such as The Treetop Walkway, The Palm House and The Princess of Wales conservatory. In addition, 2 students from each class were selected as winners by their class teachers with their winning photo.  See below for the winning entries - we are sure you will agree that these are stunning!

Miss Ashman, Head of Geography

  • Harry Adby 9E

“A close up of the spikes on this Cactus is a winning photo, the image is so clear that it shows how the colour changes as you go along each spike.”

“Cacti, desert biome Miss Read loved how this photograph seems to make the cactus look alive - it almost looks as if an insect is crawling along the spine of the plant!”

  • Katy Fletcher 9E

“A picture of an encephalartos ferox which gets its name from the Latin word ferocious most likely from the spine-tipped lobes on its leaves. I picked these two images by Katy as I really liked that Katy had taken something unusual at Kew, especially the twisted vine! Well done”

I TOOK IT AT KEW GARDENS. :) Miss Read loved how uniquely this plant stood out, even against the vibrancy of the rainforest biome.

  • Atharva Kolvankar 9B

“I took this photo to truly encompass the true beauty of the Banana and to put on display the sheer elegance of the divine features of the Banana. I made sure to use the pure sunlight coming through the rafters to further enhance the features of the Banana in the foreground. Another feature of the photo that I have fallen in love with is how the vast leaves are encaptured in the background adding a very unique rainforest feel to the image. There are many components in this image that come together to create this dazzling spectacle in front of your eyes. The auburn shadows, the brilliant composition of the objects. The most important part of this image would be be how the photography technique ‘the rule of two-thirds’ is utilised to create something special.”

“This picture was taken when we climbed up the stairs to view Kew Gardens from a Bird's Eye perspective. It was truly mesmerising with the beautiful Temperate house being shown in the back and a great stock of big green trees modelling as ones in the rainforest to show its size.”
