  • Kent County Finals Girls' Cricket ~ June 2024

    Published 17/06/24

Our girls' cricket teams competed at the Kent County finals for softball cricket in both U13 and U15 age groups on Tuesday, and played some fantastic cricket in securing second and fourth places, respectively.

    Year 8

The Year 8s enjoyed a dominant win in the semi-final against Highworth Grammar, with some excellent batting and catches by Shriya key to the victory.  In the final they narrowly lost to a very strong Chis & Sid team.  The girls qualify for the regional finals in July, which is a great achievement.

    Year 10

The Year 10s made incredible progress, and only missed out on 3rd place by 1 run - a thrilling final over against Hayes where they only just came up short.  Darina's captaincy and encouragement was a fine example to everyone and Kate's batting was a real highlight.

It was fantastic to see the progress our girls' cricket has made in the last couple of years, from occasional players to county finalists in two age groups.  We hope it is just the start for our cricketers.  The girls all represented BGS and themselves brilliantly all day, and should be proud of themselves, as we are. Well done everyone.

    Year 9 Rounders Tournament

It was a 2nd place finish for the Year 9 rounders team at the Bexley tournament at Townley. The team displayed exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and teamwork throughout the competition, with solid batting performances and strategic game play. A special mention goes to our standout performers:
Devine for her outstanding efforts in both batting
and outfield, along with Lisa for her calm and composed bowling.
    A nail-biting final game!

    Go team!

    Year 8 & 10 Rounders Teams v Trinity

Double success for our rounders teams against Trinity. High scoring games in all innings across both age groups. Our Year 8s produced rapid bowling, with outstanding deep field catches from Victoria, earning her the player of the match along with Nifemi for her consistent batting.

A well battled game for the Year 10s girls. Another friendly and competitive again. Well done to everyone, and the rain held off!

    Mrs Kemp and Mrs Mallin

Year 7 Cricket Team v Bullers Wood

What a close game the Year 7 team were involved in last week! We got Bullers Wood (B) all out for 66 without them completing their full 20 overs. With 1 ball left of the game, we needed 2 runs to win.

We managed to get 1 run and the scores were level!  As we bowled their team out and took more wickets, we progressed into the next round of the cup. It was great to see how pleased all the team were.

A special congratulation goes to those boys making their BGS debut.

    Well done all!

Year 10 Cricket Squad V Gravesend Grammar

The Year 10 cricket squad put in a spirited performance against a very strong Gravesend Grammar School side last week.  We batted first but struggled to build any partnerships of note.  As a result, we were all out for 66 runs.  Although we did well to take a few early wickets, ultimately Gravesend won the match and therefore went through to the next round of the competition.

We look forward to our next fixture against Beths!

    Mr Mackle

    Year 8 Cricket v Hurstmere

Well done to the Year 8 cricket team, who eased to an 8 wicket win against Hurstmere on Monday. A blistering opening bowling spell from Atharva (4 wickets) and Ethan (2) left Hurstmere reeling at 9 for 6.  The boys knocked off the runs to win in less than 10 overs.

Power Day 4 ~ Well Done Year 7!

On Power Day 4, Year 7 took part in a PE fundraising event, with a competition to see which student and which form could be sponsored the most.  The students did a brilliant job, and raised nearly £2500!

7LC were crowned the highest fundraising form, and 5 students were given certificates for raising the most sponsorship: Ben McCarthy 7TMR, Caitlin Mackintosh 7TMR, Daniel Blair-Hicks 7SDA, Adi Chana 7LC and Charlotte Luxford 7LC.  Kasey Bokhoree-Cejzner 7LC also took the trophy for being our fundraising champion after he raised an incredible £210

The funds will be used to contribute to our new tennis court fencing, and will also go towards the cost of a new scoreboard in the sports hall.  Thank you to everyone who sponsored a student, and to the pupils themselves for their hard work.

    Year 8 Football

Well done to the Year 8 football team who finished the season as Runners-Up in the North Kent Cup.  They played the final last Wednesday against a very strong Wilmington Grammar School side that had not conceded a goal throughout their season.  A great level of quality football from both teams was on show, but Wilmington ended up as Champions by winning 3-2 in an entertaining and exciting match.

Congratulations to them as North Kent Champions and well done to the Year 8 squad for a real battling performance. Heads can most definitely be held high, even though the result didn't go our way.

Thank you to all who came to support them! Maybe next year will be our year... enjoy the summer break.

Mr Mackle & Mr Skinner, PE Department

Well Done Year 10 Sports Leaders!

Well done to our fantastic Year 10 sports leaders who led a brilliant mini-tennis tournament for 6 local primary schools on Wednesday afternoon. Our leaders were a credit to themselves and the school.

    Thank you!

    Year 7 Cricket

Well done to the Year 7 cricket team after a hard fought battle against Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School. Unfortunately, BGS came out second best this time despite scoring a very credible 284. The team spirit was fantastic, and the team were an absolute pleasure to work with in their first away fixture of the season. Yet more BGS pupils making their debut!

    Year 8 Cricket

Well done to the Year 8 cricket team, who secured a comfortable 8-wicket win over Charles Darwin on Monday afternoon in the Kent Trophy.

The boys can look forward to the next round after half-term.

    Year 10 Cricket

A close opening game for our Year 10 cricket team. We scored 107 off 20 overs.  Wilmington reached the total with an over to go. A lovely evening and an enjoyable game that had lots of twists and turns.

Ultimately, some excellent fielding from Wilmington beat us. The focus turns to our next fixture in a few days!

    Badminton – Congratulations James!

Many congratulations to James Ng (Year 8) who, along with his Kent U15 teammates, secured a national badminton title at the finals of the Shires League at Loughborough University.  Qualifying by winning all of their matches during the season, James and his team beat Hertfordshire in round 1 of the finals, Warwickshire in the semi-final and Essex in the final.  Winning a national competition is a huge achievement - well done James!

  • Bexley Champs!

    Published 23/05/24

Well done to our Year 9 and 10 students who competed brilliantly at the Bexley Athletics Championships last week. There were a number of notable performances, with wins for Ava in the discus, Maddie in javelin, Molly in the long jump and a dominant win for Austin in the 800m. It wasn't just the winners, though - we accumulated a lot of points from many strong efforts in all events.

Thanks also to our Year 12 PE prefects, who supported our students, and assisted with other events on the day and were a credit to BGS.

  • Well done - The Future Cheer Competition!

    Published 21/05/24

On Sunday 5th May, I had the honour of being able to go to the Future Cheer Competition in Milton Keynes. As soon as I entered the arena, I felt a sudden chill, not from the crispy 6am air, but a chill of excitement. Seeing the other schools with their colour-coordinated uniforms was intimidating. However, my aim was not to drown in the pressure, but to have a nice time and enjoy the experience, and I surely did.

After all the performances, there was a moment when people started to dance to songs they played on the speakers. This escalated into a massive dance circle where people were showing off their best moves and, before I knew it, I was in the middle of this circle showing off some of mine. When I got up, I saw the shock on everyone’s faces and I just couldn't help but smile.

Then the awards were announced and we came 6th! It may not seem that high, but for our first ever time, I thought it was excellent!

This was an amazing experience, and I'm sure everyone else on the trip would agree. I will always remember this day and the amazing teacher who made all this possible. Thank you, Miss Mani.

  • Congratulations Alice!

    Published 07/05/24

Huge congratulations to Alice Black and her netball team. Alice went to Sunderland to compete last weekend and came an impressive 7th in England!  Alice plays for Kent County Netball Club. Following an initial qualifying regional tournament and 14 matches throughout the season, they gained a place at the U16 National Finals. The 18 best teams in England played over 2 days, in Sunderland, at the Beacon of Light Stadium. Their team, KCNC, won 5 of their 7 matches in the Finals, only losing to the eventual winners and another top team. Congratulations to Alice, an excellent GD circle defender who played every match, blocking out the opposition, defending shots and making interceptions to turn the play over. She is part of an amazing team, who worked brilliantly together to beat tough opponents, and we can proudly say they came 7th in the country.

    Teamwork at its best!

The PE department is proud of your success, Alice. Well done!

  • Year 9 & 10 Netball Trip

    Published 24/04/24

    London Pulse V Saracens Mavericks

On Monday 15th April, the Year 9 and 10 girls' netball team went to watch the London Pulse netball team play against Saracens Mavericks at the Copper Box Arena.  It was really exciting to get to see them play, especially from the front few rows.

We watched how quickly they moved with the ball and how they worked the ball towards the shooters. The score was really close throughout the whole game and the last few minutes were really tense as the score was tied until the last second.

Everyone really enjoyed watching, and we would all love to go again!

  • Year 9 Kent Cup ~ Well Done Boys!

    Published 06/03/24

All season the boys have been working hard to keep their undefeated streak in the Kent Cup alive with some very impressive performances against difficult opposition.  This all came to a head on Saturday when they played in the final against Harvey Grammar School at the Gallagher Stadium, home of Maidstone Utd.

The boys had a quieter than normal warm up and the pre-game talk was about focusing on a quick start and not allowing the opposition to play.  The boys took to their task perfectly and created a few early chances, but Harvey's goalkeeper kept the scores level.  Against the run of play, Harvey Grammar managed to score a free kick to give them an early lead, but it was short-lived.  Bexley picked themselves up and, after a string of excellent play, Jesse pushed the ball past the goalkeeper to equalise.  We managed to get the ball in the net again before half-time, but it was ruled offside. 1-1 at half-time.

The team talk was all about pushing on and converting our chances.  We knew that we wanted to score early in order to take this game away from Harvey Grammar, and we did with one of George's huge throws, capitalised on by Maks.  2-1 Bexley.

The game ebbed and flowed, but Bexley continued to assert their dominance over the game, just not having an end product.  Harvey Grammar's best player, who had been relatively quiet in the game thanks to our robust defending, picked up the ball and started an incredible run through to goal where there was a tangle of legs and, after some confusion, a penalty was given.  2-2.  It stayed that way until the end of the game, even with a few late chances from our boys, we couldn't get the ball in the net.  Under Kent rules, there is no longer extra time and penalties, so we had to settle for a shared trophy. For all round, excellent play Luke F was picked as Player of the Match.

Although it felt like a loss on the day, I couldn't be more proud of these boys and the effort and commitment that they have shown to this team.  Next time, we will win outright...

  • 1st XI Football - Kent League Champions!

    Published 28/02/24

Bexley Grammar School 1st XI were confirmed as Champions of the league after beating Beths 3-2 on Wednesday 21st February. Thanks to an epic 2-1 win away at Gravesend in January with only 10 men (goals from Kyran Forbes and Liam Hutchings, brilliantly assisted by Riley Woods), BGS had their title chances in their own hands when they travelled to 2nd place Beths. Anything less than 3 points would have meant their bitter rivals walked away with the League instead.

Year 11 North Kent Cup Final (2022)

Having arrived at Beths, there was drama over the kick-off, as the pitches were playable, but it seemed that the opposition was nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, they turned up, slightly late, and the game was on. Beths started strongly and took an early lead, before Obi Igwe curled in a beauty with his left foot (the least he could do after missing a previous game!), before he then set up Riley Boyle to put BGS 2-1 up in a dominant first half display, the defence dealing with the Beths attacks, Dexter Gilchrist and Liam Hutchings putting in crunching tackles, Leo Ridge rampaging down the right-hand side and Miko leading the line like an old-fashioned number 9. Chances came and went, but as the second half started, former BGS student Arinze led Beths revival as they equalised with just over 20 minutes to go, and the title was slipping away from our hands. However, a brilliant interception high up from Riley Woods saw him with a chance to cross for Mason McKenna to scoop the ball home for a well-deserved winner with just under 10 minutes to go. Obi hit the post late on, but the boys comfortably held on, thanks in part to Aidan Wicks’ safe hands and game management, to secure BGS’ first ever 1st XI league title. A brilliant performance, expertly led by captain Oli Knight. Mal Turner was a standout player, causing havoc for the Beths defence with his clever positioning helping to create space for the forwards, but everyone in the squad played their part.

Year 8 North Kent Cup Final (2019)

It’s been a pleasure to have coached the Year 13s since they were in Year 7. They’ve been a fantastic bunch of people, and I’ve enjoyed every high and low with them over the years. We’ve had a number of cup finals (fewer than we should have due to Covid), but this victory is no more than they deserve for their hard work, dedication and attitude over the years. A credit to all the squad, who have contributed to this success throughout the school year!

The following players have made appearances this year: Aidan Wicks (GK), Oli Knight (C), Liam Hutchings, Mason McKenna, Leo Ridge, Dillon Walton, Riley Woods, Tayo Odumusi, Dexter Gilchrist, Jed Baulch, Hayden Ouattara, Mal Turner, Riley Boyle, Obi Igwe, Miko Bielski, Kyran Forbes, Jack Ristow, Sam Hood (GK), George Bell, Loic Ndoutoumou, JJ Adeduntun

Mr Martin, Year 13 Football Coach

     Year 7 (2018)

I cannot believe it’s over already. It seems as if just a couple of days ago I was turning up as a nervous Year 7 to the school football team trials. What a journey we have all come on as a team. I’ve had a great time playing for the school football team and the players, and we would all like to thank Mr Martin for the effort he has put in to make this incredible journey happen for us. From training before school to away matches in Canterbury, Mr Martin has put up with us for 7 Years, and we cannot thank him enough. This league win in our last game was a fantastic way to sign off. We played some of the best football we have ever played, with lots of rotations, clever movement and intricate passes all over the pitch. Now the only thing left we have to win is the Sixth Form vs teachers match later on this year. I think we have it in the bag. I’ve heard rumours round the school saying that we were the Bexley Grammar golden era!

Well done to all the boys who have played this year and, yet again, thank you to Mr Martin!

    Oli Knight, Year 13
