Year 11 Work Experience at Fashion Brand 'Never Fully Dressed'

I obtained an incredible opportunity to join the Design Team at the well-known fashion company Nobody's Child for my work experience.

I was given first-hand knowledge of the fashion design industry by Louise Braybrook, a former BGS student. In addition to being inspiring, the week there gave me the opportunity to observe how teamwork and innovation create a successful brand and allowed me to apply my GCSE textile knowledge to real life.

Q: What aspects of the GCSE textile subject did you find enjoyable, and what motivated you to pursue it further?

A: Louise's favourite thing was having the flexibility to be creative. Ms Smith encouraged them to try new things all the time and this helped her recognise that a profession in textiles was what she should do. She would spend lunchtimes in the textiles room, working on projects like screen printing while things dried, experimenting with techniques like melting materials, spray-painting objects to stitch onto fabric. The freedom to try new things was invaluable.

Q: How did Textiles GCSE help manage other academic subjects?

A: While seen as more creative, textiles still require analytical skills to analyse inspiration, explain processes in sketchbooks, and develop presentation skills - abilities that are transferred to other subjects like English too.

Q: Can you discuss your journey since leaving school to your current role?

A: After A-levels, a foundation diploma, and a textile design degree with an industry placement year. After a few years in the fashion industry, Louise is now a designer at Nobody's Child. She has opportunities to travel internationally to visit suppliers.
