Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion
We value every individual in our community and are constantly seeking to develop the talents of each student. There are a range of groups, societies and clubs which meet to support specific needs and/or interests of students, such as:
- Afro-Caribbean Society
- Balkans and Eastern European Society
- Carers Club
- LGBTQ+ Alliance
- South-East Asian Society
We hold an annual Culture Day and an International Week, in which we celebrate different cultures and proudly share our heritage with each other. We also promote Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and some of our students with additional students have self-advocated to become Autism Champions and Dyslexia Champions, as well as some members of our deaf community giving training and assemblies to the rest of our community.
We are an anti-racist, anti-homophobic, anti-misogynist school. We have worked departmentally over the past four years to pro-actively decolonise our curricula, and undergo annual training on racial literacy to develop our knowledge and tools to further promote this.
Our pastoral team of Form Tutors, Senior Academic Mentors and Directors of Studies provide outstanding individual care - BGS is known locally for this excellent level of support. Our Year 7 transition programme includes allocating a trained sixth form Peer Mentor to each class, and during the first term there is a range of events to support parents in their child's transition to secondary school.
Any student struggling for any reason is supported. Our fully-qualified Higher Level Teaching Assistants work closely with teachers to accommodate additional learning or medical needs, and they provide 1:1 support, a homework club, booster lessons, and other groups. Where appropriate, the pastoral team refers a student to our full-time school counsellor.
