Physical Education

Welcome to the Physical Education Department!

Our mission at Bexley Grammar School is to provide fully inclusive, enjoyable and intelligent Physical Education that achieves each student's physical potential, whilst developing self-confidence, sportsmanship and academic success. We do this via a rich and varied curriculum, which focuses on fundamental skills that are applicable to all sports and activities; and also through the numerous extra-curricular activities that are provided for our students.

key stage 3

Key Stage 3 begins by working on the fundamentals of agility, balance and coordination – core principles that will enable students to enhance their physical proficiency in all sports. Although the work is physical, the assessments vary in focus, including cognitive, social, personal, creative activities. All students also complete a Health Related Exercise unit of work each year, which helps them understand how to maintain and improve their health and fitness.

key stage 4

At Key Stage 4 all pupils continue to undertake compulsory core PE, with some choosing to study Physical Education at GCSE level. The GCSE course is 40% practical and includes the performance of 3 sports, while the theory aspect involves the study of healthy, active lifestyles and the impact of health and exercise on the body. The intention within core PE is to provide a variety of experiences through a wide range of sports. Leadership is a key theme of KS4 – students organise and lead teams within a “Sport Education” unit of work, and the Level 1 Course in Sports Leadership is also a very popular option for students each year. Our sports leaders organise and lead a number of tremendous events for local primary school children throughout Year 10.

key stage 5

Exam courses available at KS5 are Sports Exercise and Health Science at standard and higher levels within the International Baccalaureate. More information on each course can be found via the sixth form link on this website.

All KS5 pupils have the option of participating in a variety of sports. Students in Years 12 and 13 have a choice of activities, and have the option to pursue physical activity in school, or off-site at a gym or similar.

extra curricular activities

Extra curricular clubs are provided for all students in a wide range of activities: from rugby to cheerleading!  Training and fixtures take place before school, at lunchtime, after school and on Saturday mornings. Teams are entered into North Kent, Kent and National competitions, with many recent successes. While successes are celebrated, our aim is the participation of as many students as possible, with everyone welcome to attend training and practices, regardless of ability or experience.

The PE department also runs foreign trips: a football and netball tour in the October half term, and a ski trip in the February half term. Students who have competed for the relevant teams are invited to join the football and netball tour, while the ski trip is open to all students regardless of experience.
