Young Enterprise, Illumina, at the East London Finals
Five representatives from this year's Young Enterprise team, Illumina, competed against other school teams in the East London Finals of the Company Programme competition on Monday 13th May. Luke Winter, Evie Nguyen, Max Campbell (M.D.), Jasreen Ghag and Ethan Abbate travelled to the Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP offices in London where they showcased their company. Students had already completed a detailed business report for the previous round of the competition. As with the previous round, students needed to set up a trade stand to demonstrate and give information on their product - multisensory candles designed to help various mental health issues. The judges interviewed the five representatives at their stand where they needed to explain the inspiration behind the product and trade stand presentation, while they also tempted the judges with the scents of the five candles (which just so happened to be represented in the outfit choices of the team members!). The team were then taken off to a separate interview room where judges quizzed them on the Company Programme process, their experiences and next steps. After that, the team were greeted by other members of the team, parents and Mr Gilmore, who had travelled to London to show their support. Finally, the team needed to give a presentation to everyone at the event. They were the last to present but soon had the audience participating in finding the hidden Illumina leaflets under their chairs to give a visual representation of the sheer number of people struggling with mental health issues. They did a fantastic job in all areas and were honoured to be awarded the Marketing Award. Sadly, they didn’t proceed to the next stage of the competition, narrowly missing out to 'Seed Paper' and 'Light up bookmarks'.
We are extremely proud of the achievements of this team and to win an award at this tough stage is telling of the hard work, dedication and business acumen of this wonderful group of students, both those representing them and those behind the scenes. We are also very grateful for the support that has been offered to the team from peers, teachers, parents and the P.A.
The company will be dissolved in July, so please make sure you get your candles before then to avoid disappointment! Buy here: https://illuminacandles.co.uk/orders

The Tempest - the reviews are in!
‘It feels like one big family, rehearsing twice a week’
I loved performing in the Year 7-9 Shakespeare plays because the whole time you are working with people who are around the same age as you and have common interests. It feels like one big family, rehearsing twice a week, for up to two hours, and working up to your big performance day! Being 'Caliban' was the absolute best, as I got to portray the role of a sometimes drunk, funny and sometimes scared monster.

Badminton – Congratulations James!
Many congratulations to James Ng (Year 8) who, along with his Kent U15 teammates, secured a national badminton title at the finals of the Shires League at Loughborough University. Qualifying by winning all of their matches during the season, James and his team beat Hertfordshire in round 1 of the finals, Warwickshire in the semi-final and Essex in the final. Winning a national competition is a huge achievement - well done James!

Future Cheer Competition
On Sunday 5th May, I had the honour of being able to go to the Future Cheer Competition in Milton Keynes. As soon as I entered the arena, I felt a sudden chill, not from the crispy 6am air, but a chill of excitement. Seeing the other schools with their colour-coordinated uniforms was intimidating. However, my aim was not to drown in the pressure, but to have a nice time and enjoy the experience, and I surely did.
After all the performances, there was a moment when people started to dance to songs they played on the speakers. This escalated into a massive dance circle where people were showing off their best moves and, before I knew it, I was in the middle of this circle showing off some of mine. When I got up, I saw the shock on everyone’s faces and I just couldn't help but smile.
Then the awards were announced and we came 6th! It may not seem that high, but for our first ever time, I thought it was excellent!
This was an amazing experience, and I'm sure everyone else on the trip would agree. I will always remember this day and the amazing teacher who made all this possible. Thank you, Miss Mani.

Update - There is still time to support Dylan and The Greenwich & Bexley Hospice!
Dylan ran the Greenwich and Bexley Mini Marathon in memory of his Dad, Matt Banks.
I ran the mini-marathon for Greenwich and Bexley Hospice in memory of my Dad, Matt Banks. It’s the 11th anniversary of the event and I want to support them again as they gave my Dad very important end of life care.
This year was my last mini-marathon, and I am so grateful to have taken part these last three years, and who knows, maybe I'll do a full marathon one day! And beat my Dad's best time, of course.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
